THE BIGGEST SCANDAL IN U.S. HISTORY

By Ann Coulter

Forget executive privilege, contempt of Congress, "fast and furious," how many documents the government has produced and who said what to whom on which date.

The Obama administration has almost certainly engaged in the most shockingly vile corruption scandal in the history of the country, not counting the results of Season Eight on "American Idol."

Administration officials intentionally put guns into the hands of Mexican drug cartels, so that when the guns taken from Mexican crime scenes turned out to be American guns, Democrats would have a reason to crack down on gun sellers in the United States.

Democrats will never stop trying to take our guns away. They see something more lethal than a salad shooter and wet themselves.

But since their party was thrown out of Congress for the first time in nearly half a century as a result of passing the 1994 "assault weapons ban," even liberals know they were going to need a really good argument to pass any limitation on guns ever again.

So it's curious that Democrats all started telling the same lie about guns as soon as Obama became president. In March 2009, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced to reporters on a trip to Mexico: "Since we know that the vast majority, 90 percent of that weaponry (used by Mexican drug cartels), comes from our country, we are going to try to stop it from getting there in the first place."

As she sentimentally elaborated on Fox News' Greta Van Susteren show: "The guns sold in the United States, which are illegal in Mexico, get smuggled and shipped across our border and arm these terrible drug-dealing criminals so that they can outgun these poor police officers along the border and elsewhere in Mexico."

Suddenly that 90 percent statistic was everywhere. It was like the statistic on women beaten by their husbands on Super Bowl Sunday.

CBS' Bob Schieffer asked Obama on "Face the Nation": "It's my understanding that 90 percent of the guns that they're getting down in Mexico are coming from the United States. We don't seem to be doing a very good job of cutting off the gun flow. Do you need any kind of legislative help on that front? Have you, for example, thought about asking Congress to reinstate the ban on assault weapons?"

At a Senate hearing, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said: "It is unacceptable to have 90 percent of the guns that are picked up in Mexico and used to shoot judges, police officers and mayors ... come from the United States."

And then, thanks to Fox News -- the first network to report it -- we found out the 90 percent figure was complete bunkum. It was a fabrication told by William Hoover, of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATF), and then spread like wildfire by Democrats and the media.

Mexican law enforcement authorities send only a fraction of the guns they recover from criminals back to the U.S. for tracing. Which guns do they send? The guns that have U.S. serial numbers on them. It would be like asking a library to produce all their Mark Twain books and then concluding that 90 percent of the books in that library are by Mark Twain.

You begin to see why the left hates Fox News so much.

Obama backed away from the preposterous 90 percent claim. His National Security Council spokesman explained to Fox News that by "recovered," they meant "guns traceable to the United States." So, in other words, Democrats were frantically citing the amazing fact that almost all the guns traceable to the U.S. were ... traceable to the U.S.

Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters that even if the percentage is inaccurate, the "vast majority" of guns seized in crimes in Mexico come from the United States. (And he should know, because it turns out he was sending them there!)

This was absurd. Most of the guns used by drug cartels are automatic weapons -- not to mention shoulder-fired rockets -- that can't be sold to most Americans. They are acquired from places like Russia, China and Guatemala.

Right about the time the 90 percent lie was unraveling, the Obama administration decided to directly hand thousands of American guns over to Mexican criminals. Apart from the fact that tracking thousands of guns into Mexico is not feasible or rational, the dumped guns didn't have GPS tracing devices on them, anyway. There is no conceivable law enforcement objective to such a program.

This is what we know:

(1) Liberals thought it would be a great argument for gun control if American guns were ending up in the hands of Mexican criminals;

(2) They wanted that to be true so badly, Democrats lied about it;

(3) After they were busted on their lie, the Obama administration began dumping thousands of guns in the hands of Mexican criminals.

We also know that hundreds of people were murdered with these U.S.-government-supplied guns, including at least one American, U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry.

But let's look on the bright side. The BATF was originally going to ship warheads to Iran until realizing the explosions might disable the tracking devices.

(Contrary to more Democrat lies, there was no program to dump thousands of guns in Mexico under George W. Bush. The Bush administration did have a program that put GPS trackers on about 100 guns in order to actually trace them. That operation was ended almost as soon as it began because of the lack of cooperation from Mexican officials. You may as well say Holder's program was "started" by the first cop who ever put tracer dye on contraband.)

No one has explained what putting 2,500 untraceable guns in the hands of Mexican drug dealers was supposed to accomplish.

But you know what that might have accomplished? It would make the Democrats' lie retroactively true -- allowing them to push for the same gun restrictions they were planning when they first concocted it. A majority of guns recovered from Mexican criminals would, at last, be American guns, because Eric Holder had put them there.

Unfortunately for the Democrats, some brave whistleblower inside the government leaked details of this monstrous scheme. As soon as Congress and the public demanded answers, Holder clammed up. He just says "oops" -- and accuses Republicans of racism.

Obama Administration’s Breathtaking Arrogance on Questions about Inviting a Terrorist to Washington

by Andrew C. McCarthy

One should always hesitate before jumping to the conclusion that the something that just happened is the worst thing that has ever happened — history usually has many worse “worsts” ready to hand. Still, if there has been a more breathtakingly arrogant performance by an administration official in the modern history of the United States than the one Jen Rubin reports on at the Washington Post today, I can’t think of it.

The Obama administration recently issued a visa to an Egyptian named Hani Nour Eldin (pictured above), an operative of a foreign terrorist organization — formally designated as such under U.S. law — so that the administration could consult with the jihadist about Egypt’s future under the governance of Eldin’s pals at the Muslim Brotherhood. This is not speculation: Eldin brags about being a member of the organization and the administration concedes the visa was issued and the meeting happened.

Outrageous as this sounds, it does not do the outrage justice. The terrorist organization in question, the Islamic Group (Gama’at al Islamia), is the group led by Omar Abdel Rahman, the notorious “Blind Sheikh” currently serving a life sentence in U.S. federal prison for his foundational role in forming the jihadist cell that carried out the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and was later thwarted while attempting simultaneously to bomb several other New York City landmarks. (I handled the case for the United States, back when its government thought jihadists should be prosecuted rather than cultivated.) The Blind Sheikh’s cell, essentially, was a U.S. branch of the Islamic Group (IG).

Moreover, the IG has committed numerous atrocities the goal of which has been to extort the United States into releasing the Blind Sheikh from prison. These include the barbaric murders of several dozen tourists in Luxor, Egypt, in 1997. The IG, in conjunction with its allies in al Qaeda, has openly and repeatedly threatened violence against the United States if the Blind Sheikh is not released and repatriated to Egypt. A staple of the Egyptian Islamic Ascendancy Arab Spring is the now routine and hostile IG-driven demonstration outside the U.S. embassy to demand the Blind Sheikh’s release. So seriously has our government heretofore taken the IG that the Bush Justice Department prosecuted the Blind Sheikh’s lawyer, Lynne Stewart, for material support to terrorism over her communication of messages from the Blind Sheikh to IG members in Egypt.

Despite being 70 years old, Stewart was ultimately sentenced to ten years in prison for consulting with and advising the IG. The Obama administration is now doing essentially the same thing Stewart was doing but calling it “foreign policy.” The administration is actively aiding and abetting members of a terrorist organization with a hellacious record of violence and threats of violence against the United States. That is not just a departure from American policy against negotiating with terrorists; it is a serious violation of federal law.

Such an abomination is this that even the Obamedia has been roused from its slumbers to question the administration about it. As Jen recounts, the inquiries Friday were put to State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland.

The transcript Jen produces is jaw-dropping. Nuland quips that, when word of the visa’s issuance became public, the administration only “pledged to [the press] that we would look into it” — not that the most transparent administration in history would actually report back on what was uncovered about how and why the visa to the terrorist operative was issued. One incredulous reporter responded, “I don’t recall you saying when you said you were going to look into it, that you weren’t going to tell us what the results of the investigation were. I missed that part.” The laugh-a-minute Ms. Nuland’s responded, “That’s true. You did.”

AFP further notes, in a story bearing the astonishing title, “US justifies visa for Egypt Islamist,” that Nuland claimed the administration had no “reason to believe that [Eldin] — who at the time of his application was a member of parliament — would pose a threat to the United States.” That’s rather obnoxious.

The law of material support to terrorism does not make an exception for members of the terrorist organization that the State Department, in its infinite wisdom, thinks are probably not dangerous. (This, by the way, is the same State Department that used to use convicted terrorist financier Abdurrahman Alamoudi as an emissary.) Moreover, the fact that a country whose population is 75 percent Sunni supremacist decides to elect terrorists to its parliament is of no consequence as far as American criminal law is concerned: The IG is a terrorist organization, and assisting its members is a felony regardless of what parliament they belong to. The designated terrorist organization Hamas is the government of Gaza; members of the designated terrorist organization Hezbollah hold political office in Lebanon. Is the Obama administration saying that once terrorist organizations launder themselves through the rinse-cycle of “sharia-democracy” they are no longer terrorist organizations? If so, somebody better let Congress know, because our statutes still seem to say that supporting members of designated foreign terrorist organizations is a crime.

But then again, why bother with Congress when you’ve convinced yourself that you can rule like a dictator, when the Congress is content to let you walk all over it, and when Mitt Romney doesn’t appear to think national security is an issue worth campaigning on?

At 38, Derek Jeter continues to show up and get the job done for the Yankees

Things have changed for Derek Jeter since he joined the Yankees. But as he celebrates his 38th birthday five championships later, things are still the same.

His teammates kept coming by his locker Tuesday in the clubhouse, patting the old shortstop on the back, wishing him a happy 38th birthday, until Derek Jeter could take no more. “This isn’t grade school,” he grumped, only half in jest.

Jeter doesn’t particularly enjoy such milestones or timelines, although he’ll begrudgingly tell you, “When people give me gifts, I don’t mind it.” He has been this successful, in large part, because of an uncanny ability to live in the moment while dismissing all the background noise and falling calendar leaves. Jeter doesn’t require perspective, because his brain is wired to eliminate context. He concentrates only on the spin of the baseball as it approaches the plate.

“I don’t come in here today thinking about what I did yesterday,” Jeter said, before leading off against Cleveland one more time. “I don’t come in here thinking about what could happen tomorrow. It’s just what you can do on that particular day.

“It’s my job. That’s the way I always looked at it.”

Certainly, a bit of the crazy, spontaneous joy and mischief has left the game for him over the years, if only because of lost friends and friendships. He once snuggled between Joe Torre and Don Zimmer on the bench between at-bats, inhaling their tales, disarming them while playing provocateur. His best pal, Jorge Posada, no longer dresses in the same uniform, no longer drives with him to or from games. He doesn’t even get to love/hate George Steinbrenner, or all the maddening fuss that came with the Boss.

Jeter doesn’t sing in the clubhouse anymore, Joe Girardi noticed, doesn’t tease guys quite as much as they walk past. His hairline is receding, along with his gaudy, early season batting average. But say this for the Yanks’ national treasure: He shows up for work every day, fields his position with enduring, leaping grace and still hits those inside-out doubles into the gap when the pitcher makes a mistake.

Jeter still follows the path of a pitch, uniquely, all the way into the catcher’s mitt, whenever he takes a ball. When he gets on base, he still smiles and banters with opponents as if this were his rookie season.

Things are different. Things are the same.

“When you’re young, you show up, you don’t have batting practice, you don’t even stretch,” Jeter said. “You spend a little more time getting ready. I don’t know if you can say it’s harder. It gets longer. There’s days, there’s little things. But when I feel good, I feel good. There’s no noticeable difference, I don’t think.”

There are plenty of things to celebrate and savor, if Jeter ever steps outside of his own laser focus for a moment.

He went into the game on Tuesday with 3,181 career hits, 14th highest in history and the third-most at his age behind Ty Cobb and Hank Aaron. Jeter was 11 hits ahead of the pace of all-time leader Pete Rose, although of course the Yankee shortstop will not even consider Rose’s mark. As he pointed out, he didn’t figure to catch Rose’s mark on Tuesday, so what was the point of such ruminations?

Unlike his partner on the left side of the Yankee infield, Jeter has always been able to deflect difficult queries stylishly. He has the ability, still, to identify safe and dangerous questions from interviewers and treat them appropriately. You want to talk about his hitting stance? Jeter will sit down, discuss it at length. You want to dissect his relationship with Alex Rodriguez? He’ll politely decline. Not going to happen.

His fellow Yankees marvel at Jeter’s single-mindedness, his ability to shed all distractions with a shoulder shrug. He is still this way, at 38, even after five titles and two stadiums.

“It’s all gone by so fast,” Andy Pettitte said. “Blink your eyes and it doesn’t feel so long ago we won our first World Series.”

There’s that perspective thing from Pettitte, which only gets in the way. Maybe that’s why he retired for a year. For Jeter, this career of his has been a string of 2,948 regular-season games, plus 152 playoff games. A string of pearls, to be cherished one at a time.

“I was always aware that you can’t play forever,” Jeter said.

Just play the game tonight. Ignore the birthday cake.

The Evils of the Muslim Brotherhood: Evidence Keeps Mounting

Egypt's longtime banned Muslim Brotherhood—the parent organization of nearly every subsequent Islamist movement, including al-Qaeda—has just won the nation's presidency, in the name of its candidate, Muhammad Morsi. That apathy reigns in the international community, when once such news would have been deemed devastating, is due to the successful efforts of subversive Muslim apologists in the West who portray the Brotherhood as "moderate Islamists"—forgetting that such a formulation is oxymoronic, since to be "Islamist," to be a supporter of draconian Sharia, is by definition to be immoderate. Obama administration officials naturally took it a step further, portraying the Brotherhood as "largely secular" and "pluralistic."

Back in the real world, evidence that the Brotherhood is just another hostile Islamist group bent on achieving world domination through any means possible is overwhelming. Here are just three examples that recently surfaced, all missed by the Western media, and all exposing the Brotherhood as hostile to "infidels" (non-Muslims) in general, hostile to the Christians in their midst (the Copts) in particular, and on record calling on Muslims to lie and cheat during elections to empower Sharia:

Anti-Infidel: At a major conference supporting Muhammad Morsi—standing on a platform with a big picture of Morsi smiling behind him and with any number of leading Brotherhood figures, including Khairat el-Shater, sitting alongside—a sheikh went on a harangue, quoting Koran 9:12, a favorite of all jihadis, and calling all those Egyptians who do not vote for Morsi—the other half of Egypt, the secularists and Copts who voted for Shafiq—"resisters of the Sharia of Allah," and "infidel leaders" whom true Muslims must "fight" and subjugate.

The video of this sheikh was shown on the talk show of Egyptian commentator Hala Sarhan, who proceeded to exclaim "This is unbelievable! How is this talk related to the campaign of Morsi?!" A guest on her show correctly elaborated: "Note his [the sheikh's] use of the word 'fight'—'fight the infidel leaders' [Koran 9:12]; this is open incitement to commit violence against anyone who disagrees with them…. how can such a radical sheikh speak such words, even as [Brotherhood leaders like] Khairat el-Shater just sits there?" Nor did the Brotherhood denounce or distance itself from this sheikh's calls to jihad.

Anti-Christian: It is precisely because of these sporadic outbursts of anti-infidel rhetoric that it is not farfetched to believe that Morsi himself, as some maintain, earlier boasted that he would "achieve the Islamic conquest (fath) of Egypt for the second time, and make all Christians convert to Islam, or else pay the jizya."

Speaking of Christians, specifically the minority Copts of Egypt, in an article titled "The Muslim Brotherhood Asks Why Christians Fear Them?!" secularist writer Khaled Montasser, examining the Brotherhood's own official documents and fatwas, shows exactly why. According to Montasser, in the Brotherhood publication "The Call [da'wa]," issue #56 published in December 1980, prominent Brotherhood figure Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah al-Khatib decreed several anti-Christian measures, including the destruction of churches and the prevention of burying unclean Christian "infidels" anywhere near Muslim graves. Once again, this view was never retracted by the Brotherhood. As Montasser concludes, "After such fatwas, Dr. Morsi and his Brotherhood colleagues ask and wonder—"Why are the Copts afraid?!"

Lying, Stealing, and Cheating to Victory: In a recent article titled "The Islamist Group's Hidden Intentions," appearing in Watani, the author Youssef Sidhom exposes a document "which carries the logos of both the Muslim Brotherhood and its political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party." Written by the Deputy to the Supreme Guide, Khairat el-Shater and addressed "to all the Brotherhood branches in the governorates," the memo calls on Muslims to cheat, block votes, and "resort to any method that can change the vote" to ensure that Morsi wins, which, of course, he just did—amidst many accusations of electoral fraud. El-Shater concluded his memo by saying, "You must understand, brothers, that our interest lies wherever there is the Sharia of Allah, and this can only be by preserving the [MB] group and preserving Islam."

In short, the Muslim Brotherhood has not changed; only Western opinion of it has. As it was since its founding in 1928, the group is committed to empowering and spreading Sharia law—a law that preaches hate for non-Muslim "infidels," especially Islam's historic nemesis, Christianity, and allows anything, from lying to cheating, to make Islam supreme. Now that the Brotherhood has finally achieved power, the world can prepare to see such aspects on a grand scale.
